My love for the beach extends far past the sandy beaches, beaming sun, and salty breeze. It surpasses the typical teenage infatuation with the attention from the opposite gender. I love the beach with my entire being. From the surface where waves are constantly breaking, to the deep ocean trenches that scientists have yet to explore, everything about the ocean fascinates me. There’s color, life, and movement throughout the entire ocean and humans aren’t yet able to completely enjoy all the amazing aspects of the sea that we know so little about. It remains a mystery. It’s unknown; everything under the surface contains some little secret.
Over the summer I spent many weeks at the beach with family and friends, enjoying my vacation. The beach is something very close to me so for my summer work that was the main focus. This work is very straightforward and has no underlying meanings. I chose the ocean because I wanted to explore the different sides of it, from the waves to the sunlight shining through the water. This work is based off the same idea however, it is not very technical because I wanted to explore various styles of artwork.
I could have spent more amounts of time on this work. Looking at it now, I wish that I gave it more time and developed it even more. I liked creating this art more than previously because I have a lot of interest in the subject matter however it was more of a last minute effort. Compared to work from the past, I think that this work is similar, but not as thoroughly developed.
In this work, I wanted to continue exploring the different artistic techniques that I found interest in at the end of last year. I wanted to further continue to explore geometric patterns and wax. Creating the geometric patterns is the biggest challenge that I faced while working on this project because they have to be so exact and detailed. By creating this art I learned that I should explore adding more meaning to the work. After finishing and discussing I realized that being very literally with my art is not necessarily the best way to go. In the future I want to keep exploring the different geometric designs as well as wax and various other types of media.
In all honesty, I would give myself a on this assignment because I feel like I let myself down. This work could have been so much better. Looking back at all the work I’ve created none really come to mind that really stand out that I would be proud to walk around with and show anyone that passes by. In the future I want to focus more on how to develop more as an artist and produce work that I will be proud of that I will actually let my mom hang somewhere in the house.
